Biography:

Lourdes Mayol became a GSSI Advisor for Latin America in 2003, working on Spanish translation of Sports Science Exchange articles, the GSSI LATAM website and educational materials. Lourdes continues to manage this task as part of her role as an advisor to LATAM. She has participated as a speaker in conferences on topics related to sports nutrition and hydration in more than 15 Latin American countries. Lourdes currently also collaborates in the evaluation of athletes and leads programs with universities and nutritionists specialized in sports in Mexico.

From 1997 to 2000, Lourdes worked as a nutritionist for the representative teams of the Universidad Marista in Mexico City, advising more than 200 team sports athletes. During 2002, Lourdes worked with the college teams of Universidad Iberoamericana, where she worked with team sports, taekwondo and athletics. From 2003-2005, Lourdes was the nutritionist for the Mexican Swimming Federation for the National Water Polo and Synchronized Swimming teams. She currently advises groups of runners, triathletes and open water swimmers.

Lourdes has been a Professor in Diplomas, Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Hydration and Sports Nutrition, and also collaborated in chapters of books on Sports Nutrition. In 2001, Lourdes won the Latin American Prize for Sports Research, awarded by GSSI. She was part of the GSSI Science and Education Advisory Group from 2004 to 2008 and was co-founder of the Mexican Sports Nutrition Federation, and Academic Director from 2012-2017. In her Master’s work, Lourdes did studies in the area of post-exercise rehydration and the diuretic effect of different types of drinks. Her work at GSSI has allowed her to learn more about hydration and nutrition practices in Mexican athletes, mainly in soccer and endurance sports.

Lourdes played volleyball at the inter-school level in high school and at the beginning of university for 8 years. She then practiced jazz dance for 10 years. Seven years ago she started running and has completed 5 major marathons and is currently preparing to run her 6th marathon and get the "Six Star Medal".
